A taste of South Africa

Old Mates Kitchen

Review by Emilia Krumm

The wonderful thing about Old Mates Kitchen in Wyong is that everything is made on the premises, with pride and passion.

The traditional South African dishes that we chose to have for an informal lunch took me by surprise and brought on a wave of nostalgia.

Boerewors Rolls (Authentic farm style sausage with tomato and onion relish served on a hot dog roll). Vetkoek – this is deep fried bread filled with tasty savoury mince (and is better than the Aunties in the small towns can make it!).

We also had Bunny Chow (not an actual ‘bunny’ but a name given to a half loaf of bread hollowed out and filled with truly, the most delicious homemade Durban Curry). Yes, the owners are indeed from Durban!

To end our meal we had a slice of Milk Tart with coffee, (again, as good as your ‘Ma’ in S.A. would make it!!!) Compliments to the Chef!

Old Mates Kitchen also stock a variety of South African products that are worth the journey – Biltong, Dry Wors, Provita, Ouma’s Rusks, Koeksisters, Melkterte, Protea Maize Meal, Zoo biscuits, Chakalukka and Iron Brew, to name just a few!

You do not have to be South African to enjoy the food, Klara and Emma really enjoyed the experience and will definitely go back again. (I can’t wait for my next visit!)
