Things to Do

Edogawa Commemorative Garden

The Edogawa Commemorative Garden is a gift to the City of Gosford from the people of Edogawa and was officially opened on 4 September 1994 by Dirk O’Connor, the Mayor of Gosford and Mayor Nakazato of Edogawa.

The garden is designed according to the design principles of the Heian Period (700 AD) as a strolling garden with meandering pathways. It was constructed by Imperial Gardens Pty Ltd using Australian raw materials. It is based on a traditional ‘Shuyu’ (strolling style) garden, and covers an area of approximately 4000m2. The meandering pathways lead to traditional Japanese features including, a Japanese teahouse, raked dry stone garden (Karesansui), stone lanterns and a pond filled with Koi fish.  The arrangement of plants highlights the changing seasons and passing of time.

SISTER CITIES
Since 1988, Gosford City has enjoyed a Sister City relationship with Edogawa, Japan. Sister City relationships promote knowledge and appreciation of other cultures within the community and encourage the exchange of cultural information between people and nations. A display of cultural gifts from Gosford’s Sister Cities is located in the Sister City Collection display case in the Main Gallery.

Open daily, 9.30 – 4pm. Free Admission.

Mt Penang Gardens

Opened in November 2003, Mt Penang Gardens is considered an enduring and radical contribution to public garden design in Australia. Its distinctive design by Anton James sets it apart from the traditional botanical garden. His garden within a garden produces an understated landscape that is less manicured and in a constant state of being. It continues to evolve today.

12 unique garden rooms, sculptures and cascading waterways. Individual ‘gardens’ are set on and around a large sculptural plateau and walled spaces, abstract pergolas, fountains, ponds, cascades and a 35 metre cantilevered steel footbridge.

Over 8 hectares of native beauty. Along with waterways and stunning summer aquatic gardens, you’ll find that over 70% of the plants are native to Australia. Marvel at the creative ways in which modern landscapes and Australian native flora blend together to produce amazing seasonal displays.

Take the discovery trail: There is something new to experience all year round as you meander through the Gardens. You can hug a bulbous Bottle Tree; wonder at the Dragon Garden’s strange cacti and succulents; be fascinated by the Wondabyne Stone Sculptures; or admire the stunning water lilies and lotus flowers in our Aquatic Garden. From drought tolerant displays to our playful puddle gardens, every pathway opens up a new world of discovery at Mt Penang Gardens.

Open daily: 9:30am – 4:30 pm (excluding Christmas Day and Boxing Day)  Open 7 Days.  Address:  Central Coast Highway, Kariong. Phone: 43401002.  http://mtpenanggardens.com.au/
