Theatre at its finest

What if we could change a narrative to present an alternative perspective? Could we re-imagine a pivotal moment in history? Audiences would suggest this occurs consistently among the arts, through books, plays, music, and television. The Art House Presents to critical theatre lovers, The Visitors. This powerful and contemplative production takes the audience back to the arrival of the First Fleet in Sydney Cove and asks: ‘what if’ that moment was different?

The Art House auditorium will act as a parliamentary sitting room for audiences to look on as clan Elders donned in business suits discuss the mysterious visitors approaching the harbour. The attendees will catch-up, laugh together, share a meal, and compare notes. But beyond the friendly banter, protocols, and hospitality, a momentous decision is waiting to be made.

The Visitors is at once a riveting, deeply researched insight into one of the most impactful days in Australia’s history and a hugely entertaining study of how communities respond to change and the unknown. Senior drama students are strongly encouraged to see this work, as the script for The Visitors has been included in the 2025 HSC school curriculum.

Previous accolades include Best Mainstage Production and Best Ensemble at the 2023 Sydney Theatre Awards, it was the Sydney Theatre Award winning piece at the 2020 Sydney Festival as well as part of the Sydney Opera House’s 50th anniversary program.

Playwright Jane Harrison’s The Visitors embarks on a national tour directed by one of Australia’s most celebrated directors, Wesley Enoch. Enoch says of the show “A play is only a set of ideas performed for an audience, but this play is asking us as Australians to imagine a different world to the one we currently occupy and make a difference to change the world in the future.”

The Art House Presents program is committed to opening constructive conversations and presenting diversity on stage, join the discussion and grab your tickets for one night only.
