African Wild Cats at Walkabout Wildlife Sanctuary

Servals, African Wild Cats, have arrived at Walkabout Wildlife Sanctuary

We are so lucky to have three animal establishments on the NSW Central Cost. Walkabout in Calga is the one that is a genuine free-ranging wild-habitat wildlife sanctuary (or ‘preserve’).

You may ask, why Servals in an Australian wildlife sanctuary? These fascinating wild cats are the cornerstone of Walkabout’s “Safe Cat Safe Wildlife” program.

Servals look and behave like little leopards, weighing 10 to 18kg. If you’re looking for ideas on how to keep your pet cats happy at home, visit the amazing enclosure the rangers have built for these animals, and how happy these wild cats are. Climbing in tree forks, fishing in the pond, prowling their high-climb ledges, hunting for bugs in the grass, and sun-basking while surveying their world and the people and other animals from platforms 5m above you.

Visiting Walkabout Wildlife Sanctuary is like stepping through a magical portal into the animals’ world. Kangaroos, emus, wallabies, goannas, turtles, lizards, possums, plus all the other wild creatures that live in the Australian bush have the freedom to range through 80 protected fox-proof acres of wild habitat. Animals that need extra care, like koalas, Tasmanian devils, dingoes, wombats, echidnas, flying foxes, bilbies and birds live in large natural camps.

And don’t forget the Aussie farm animals in the feeding and petting area. Guineapigs, rabbits, alpacas, goats, Mrs Goose and her chickens and everyone’s favourite, Waffles the Pig.

Plus, you can explore the sanctuary’s 80 acres too. Head out along the bush tracks to visit ancient Aboriginal sites, enjoy the birdlife, find native beehives and termites, search for wild skinks living in the sandstone rock crevices, and spot illusive wallabies amongst the scribbly gums, banksia and flowering underbrush.

And yes, you can arrange a behind-the-scenes encounter with the Servals and other animals! Follow Walkabout Park Wildlife Sanctuary | Facebook for what’s on.
