Spring is in the air and it’s the perfect time to get outside and surround yourself in nature. Here on the Central Coast, we are sustainably growing Akoya pearls, which are amongst the finest quality pearls grown anywhere in the world. You can discover these hidden gems at Broken Bay Pearl Farms Shellar Door, situated on the edge of the of the stunning Lower Hawkesbury River in Mooney Mooney.
Our pearl farm experiences are the perfect way to get outside and learn something new, and a great day out for families, friends, couples, and groups.
Visitors are welcome to come in and browse our selection of locally grown pearls, shells, and jewellery, or enjoy some fresh local oysters at our outdoor seating alongside the river and enjoy the view of Spectacle Island.
Look out for our new ‘oyster tasting experience’ where you can discover the individual characteristics of the local Sydney Rock Oyster, the creamy Pacific Oyster, and our very own seafood treasure, the Akoya pearl oyster. Held on the last Sunday of the month, this new experience brings guests around our harvest table to learn the art of ‘shucking’ an oyster and to chat with our oyster farmers.
Our most popular tour is the Discovery Experience. You’ll discover the intricacies of pearl farming, with a guided tour of our Shellar Door and a cruise out to a pearl oyster lease. You will also learn the history of Australian pearling and enjoy entry into the restricted-access pearl grading room for an immersive pearl grading session. Families, couples, and groups all enjoy the tours and learning about this unique aquaculture industry on the Central Coast.
Open Tuesday through to Sunday and seven days during school holidays it’s the perfect destination for a day out, or weekend away to experience all that the Lower Hawkesbury area has to offer.
