Riding for the Disabled, Somersby

Back in the Saddle!!

RDA started on the Central Coast in 1976, with classes then moving to Juvenile Justice land at Mount Penang on the corner of Kangoo and Frank Roads, Somersby. We are one of the 35 centres administered by Riding for The Disabled Association New South Wales.

We provide horse-riding classes for local disabled riders on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays in school terms. We rely on our dedicated volunteers to look after our horses and riders; with these safe riding activities being supervised by our experienced coaches.

RDA offers so many physical and mental benefits to our riders including improved confidence, ‘core’ stability, verbal, balance and co-ordination skills – as well as the beautiful rider-to-horse bonding.

RDA is a Not-for-Profit organisation that relies on our generous community and local club support, our horse sponsors, State Government grants and our own fundraising.

We are always happy to welcome new able-bodied volunteers who are keen to join our happy group. You can see some of our activities on our Facebook page: Riding for the Disabled – Central Coast Centre.

Our beloved horses receive the very best of care. We have nine geldings including our long-time, short-legged favourite Eddy who turns 30 this year.
Our horses need to have a beautiful temperament and they all undergo a six-week trial before starting work. Therefore, our geldings need to be over 12 years old, and we are always struggling to find those perfect choices from our local area to either buy or lease at a reasonable (or no) cost. Please contact Horse Manager Gaynor Hobart on 0410 495 449 if you can recommend any possible horses.

With such great volunteers and local community support, Central Coast RDA is looking forward to continuing this excellent service.
